How can you help prevent separation anxiety?

1) When you first get your puppy or adapted dog, although they are irresistible, do not smother them with attention when they come through that door. Doing so will set a permanent precedence of how much attention they believe they will get.

2) Practice leaving for short periods of time and often to get your dog used to you coming and going. They will learn that you are in fact coming back.

3) I can not stress enough the importance of both mental and physical stimulation. Problem solving teaches your dog independence, builds confidence, and fatigues him. A tired dog is typically a calm happy dog when left alone. You can teach your dog to play hide and seek for toys, teach tricks, learn to free shape (contact me to set up an appointment and learn how), and get involved in group obedience. Even if your dog knows all the basics, group obedience is a chance to get out, get focused with distractions, and get socialized! Take your dog to a local park like Hendry’s to allow him the opportunity to play freely with other dogs.
